Rather than jump to the prophecies of Isaiah, it makes more sense to follow the Word of God along the timeline established to review the history that will bring us to the prophet Isaiah. In this segment huge amounts of history are bypassed, which must eventually be studied to understand the full truth of scripture.

The curse and beginning of sin - 4004 B.C.
After Eve had eaten of the forbidden fruit and after Adam ate of the tree, God issued a statement as he cursed the creature that had tempted Eve:
Genesis 3:14 - And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
Then God made a promise for the future:
Genesis 3:15 - And I will put enmity between thy seed and her seed: it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
What does this mean? It is a direct reference to Christ, who is the seed of the woman, from the stem of Jessie out of the house of David, and his ongoing battle with Satan.
The chain of references, which begin here, includes the promises and prophecies concerning Christ, which were fulfilled in his birth and works at His first advent.
The meaning, when placed with future scripture, tells us that Christ’s death on the cross was rendered no more than a bruise of the heel by his resurrection and ascension unto the father. Satan’s time is limited and the bruise of his head refers to eternal loss, described further in scripture as Satan’s placement into the lake of fire:
Revelation 20: 10 - And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

From the beginning, the human race was given free will to obey God or follow another path. The first murder occurs when Cain, the natural man, kills Abel, the spiritual man, as the result of Abel’s perfect offering to God while Cain’s imperfect offering was turned away.
Genesis 4:8-9 - And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him. -And the LORD said unto Cain, where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother’s keeper?
Man was allowed to follow his own path as Cain, now banished from God’s presence, started populating the earth.
Eve bore a third son, Seth, and the spiritual seed was renewed:
Genesis 4:25-26 - And Adam knew his wife again, and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew. - And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.

The flood - 2350 B.C.
Man was allowed to follow their own path for the next 1600 years and they fell away from the LORD, worshipping idols and doing nothing but evil:
Genesis 6:5 - And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
God would destroy the earth and every living thing with the exception of Noah, a just man, and his family. Noah was instructed to build an ark to hold male and female of all species:
Genesis 7:11 - In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
The flood was much more than forty days and forty nights of continuous rain. This verse tells us “on the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up . . .” There were earthquakes and rents within the earth’s surface causing tidal waves and upheavals everywhere. Destruction was likely instantaneous and complete. Water covered the earth for five months:
Genesis 7:24 - And the waters prevailed upon the earth an hundred and fifty days.
After eleven months, the waters receded and Noah left the ark, settled with his family on a great plain in the land of Shinar, and lived together for the next one hundred seventy-five years. The location of Shinar is open to conjecture but is surely east of Mt. Ararat where the ark came to rest:
Genesis 11:1-2 - And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. - And it came to pass as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.

Babel - 2175 B.C.
All Noah’s offspring lived together and spoke a single language. They were without law and each did their own bidding as they fell away from God. They decided to work together to build a tower that would reach unto the heavens. God was not pleased.
Genesis 11:7-8 - Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech. - So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth; and they left off to build the city.
Verse 7 gives us knowledge of the triune nature of GOD when it is written "... let us go down ..." In verse 8, Noah’s sons were scattered and generations were built from Noah’s three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. From the bloodline of Shem came Abram and the Nation of Israel.
